Have Yourself a Very Merry Cancun Christmas!
by Jen Campbell of Escape Destinations Travel
When I was a child, I longed to travel and dreamt of tropical paradises! Being a curious child, I was always excited about the prospect of experiencing a new piece of the world. While you could say I was bitten by the travel bug at an early age, there's one particular trip that holds a special place in my heart—wanting to spend a Christmas in Cancun!
While spending the holidays on a sunny beach may seem a little bit unconventional for some, Cancun and other areas around the tropical Caribbean have become quite popular for numerous travelers during the holidays. With a variety of exciting activities, interesting foods and unique traditions, spending Christmas abroad is a great way to experience how other countries celebrate! If you're thinking about mixing things up this holiday season, here are a few reasons why Cancun is a super great place to spread your Christmas cheer.
In the days leading up to December 25th, residents celebrate Las Posadas or the reenactment of Mary and Joseph's search for shelter on the night Jesus was born. Starting on December 16th, many locals will travel in a candlelit procession, singing traditional songs before being granted access to the "posada," or inn, where they'll partake in finger-foods, hot drinks, sweet candy and pinatas for the kids. If you have the ability to participate, Las Posadas is a beautiful way to take part in a traditional, Mexican Christmas.
However, if you find yourself shying away from the traditional Christmas, Cancun still offers plenty of things to do and see. The city itself becomes a beautiful beach-side wonderland as thousands of multicolored lights, trees and gorgeous decorations illuminate the city each night. If you need a quick dose of the Christmas spirit, take a bus or taxi downtown and work your way towards the Hotel Zone. You'll be whistling to the tune of "Holly Jolly Christmas" in no time at all!
Come Christmas Eve, you may notice a lot of the attractions, bars and restaurants may close early, but don't worry! You'll still have plenty of ways to celebrate like enjoying a special dinner at Secrets The Vine Cancun or Live Aqua Cancun, hunt for special gifts at the trendy La Isla Shopping Center or dance the night away at one of Cancun's famous exciting and vibrant nightclubs. No matter what you do, remember to try to book things in advance as some of the more popular spots tend to fill up really fast.
So if the cold weather has left you feeling a little burned out and ready for the island warmth, why not spice up your Christmas season this year with an exciting trip south of the border? It will be a very special Christmas that you won't soon forget!
